Benefits of gardening

While I am not an expert on outdoor hobbies, I think I can safely say that gardening is one of the healthiest hobbies you could have. Walking barefoot in the grass, digging in the soil, being out in nature and connected to mother earth. Not only is gardening enjoyable, but it can also help you to stay healthy.

Being outside, being in the garden can boost your ability to fight off illness. While you are grounding you are also spending time in the sun, allowing your body to produce vitamin D, which has been proven to help support the immune system and help to strengthen bones.

Gardening is also great exercise. Activities such as raking leaves or mowing your lawn are moderate, but digging in the soil, removing weeds, or chopping wood can be more intense. Gardening is a great form of exercise and engages most of your muscle groups, helping you stay active. The best part is you often don't feel like you are getting a workout - just out spending time outdoors, enjoying nature. It is said that gardeners are more likely to get restful sleep at night

Not only does gardening help you relax, but it is also great for your mind. Tending to plants helps reduce stress with the calming effect of being around plants. This is also why they say that house plants are beneficial for people who are under a lot of pressure or dealing with difficult tasks. Being in your garden may have the ability to lower anxiety, improve concentration, help you unwind, clear your head, and feel more confident.

Plant roots improve the health of soil and can help prevent soil erosion. Roots hold topsoil, preventing it from being washed or blown away. Gardening can also help our ecosystem by attracting pollinators and butterflies.

While some people enjoy the solitude of being out in the garden alone, it can also bring the family together. Gardening offers a shared purpose, where everyone can work together and enjoy the fruits of their labor. As a child, my first "paid job" was weeding the garden. My sister and I both got 2 dollars. But as we grew our gardening became part of what we did, helping plant, weed, water, harvest, and preserve. Everything tastes better out of the garden, and for this reason alone I will continue to grow a garden year after year.

If you are looking to add garlic to your garden this year, please take a look at the wonderful and tasty varieties we offer. We currently offer 14 different varieties (as of 2025), next year we will offer an additional softneck, and have a plan to add an additional variety every few years.
